WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Police say a woman has died following a shooting in southwest Wichita and her boyfriend has been arrested for murder.

Wichita police spokesperson Charley Davidson said 29-year-old Victor Castro was booked Wednesday morning for second-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm.

Officers responded Tuesday evening to a shooting in the 3100 block of South Elizabeth, near 31st and Seneca. They found 25-year-old Elsy Puente inside the home with a gunshot wound to her upper body. She was taken to a local hospital where she died.

"The investigation revealed a domestic violence disturbance occurred in the residence between Puente and Castro," Officer Davidson said. "A firearm was involved in the disturbance, and Puente was shot one time."

Castro was taken into custody at the home.

Four children, ages 3, 4, 5 and 8, were also inside the house, but none were hurt. Davidson said they are with family.

Puente was the biological mother of the four children. Castro, Puente's boyfriend, is not the children's father.

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Castro has prior convictions of aggravated assault and criminal threat in Thomas County, which is in northwest Kansas. He was sentenced in January of 2016, and his sentence expired in May of this year.

Puente's death is Wichita's 14th criminal homicide of 2019.

If you or someone you know needs help getting out of a violent relationship, the Wichita Family Crisis Center has a 24-hour crisis hotline at (316) 267-SAFE.
