Wichita rescuers save mom, 7-year-old and dog from Arkansas River

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Wichita's fire marshal says crews rescued a woman, a child and a family pet from the Arkansas River on the city's northwest side.

Crews were called just before 11 a.m. Sunday to the report of two people in the river and in distress near 21st and West streets. They arrived to find a mother and 7-year-old clinging to a bridge pylon and a kayak with a dog in the river.

Fire Marshal Stuart Bevis teams arrived on scene, lowered a rescuer from the bridge and also sent a craft out on the water. They were able to rescue the child and dog just as the mother lost her grip.

Bevis said crews were able to get her out of the water before she went over the dam.

At the time of the incident, another family member was there getting other boats ready.

"Not exactly sure how they ended up already in the river, but I don't believe they even had life jackets in place yet...so it was a very, very dangerous situation."

Thankfully, no one was injured.
