Goessel bands together after grocery store floods

Posted: Updated:
GOSSEL, Kan. (KAKE) -

Keith Banman is wading through the water that seeped into his grocery store.

"5 o'clock I thought I probably better come in and see what was going on. By then the water was up at the door and it never let up."

He says it all happened so fast.

"We had over 5 inches of rain here in town."

Its the essence of small town america. When Goessel woke up to water this morning, they didn't panic. They grabbed a squeegee to lend a helping hand.

It didn't take long for Banman's phone to ring. His usual 8 a.m. coffee crew to the rescue.

"This is what we do. We help Keith out here at the store. When this happens we all come with squeegees and get it all cleaned up," says Elton Nickel, Goessel resident.

They still carried on with their coffee first, and then they got to work.

For resident Thomas Hiebert, this mornings flooding was a rude awakening.

"I seen water out my kitchen window and I said yep it's bad so I went and woke up my boy," says Hiebert.

In his 16 years of living here, he says it's the worst he's ever seen.

Towns like Goessel forgoing picnics and parades today...instead rolling up their sleeves, helping one another, one squeegee at a time.
