Wins for Kansas: Open Door

"Open door does food clothing and shelter for about 30,000 unduplicated individuals a year in the Wichita area,” says executive director Deann Smith.

What started as an urban ministry in the sixties has now grown to become United Methodist Open Door and they serve people from all walks of life.

"As we continued got intro more social service kinds of things, barter store, shelter, food, clinic,” says Smith.

A food pantry, elders’ program, a free clothing store, their list of services goes on and on and will serve anyone who asks for help.

"We're open door. Which means that we are open to all people, anybody who is in need"

And those in need can feel comfortable asking for their help.

"We're never gonna refuse someone the first time. We're going to make sure they have what they need initially and then refer them to programs or agencies that would better fit their needs."

To help with their mission, KAKE TV and our partners DeVaughn James Injury Lawyers are honored to them as this week's, “Wins for Kansas.”
