Parts of I-235 in Wichita closing this weekendPosted: Updated:
Wichita residents are no strangers to seeing construction cones around town, but starting Friday, you might see a few more road closed signs along I-235.
“My Dad passed away in '79, and he made the remark 'you can't go anywhere in Wichita that there wasn't construction,’” said Kathy Hudson about the ongoing construction across the city, and this is a story that won’t be changing in Wichita anytime soon.
A complete closure of northbound I-235 between N. Meridian and N. Broadway is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. on Friday, June 21st. Kansas Department of Transportation says this closure is a step in the process of combining two bridges into one and eventually fixing the problematic north junction.
"This is just clearing the way so that they can finish the bridge over the little ark river, and Arkansas Avenue. That just builds half the bridge. Once we get half of the bridge built, we can put traffic on that side and build the other half,” said Tom Hein, KDOT Public Affairs Manager.
This particular closure will only last through Saturday, June 22nd. If you’re planning on traveling over the weekend, it’s best to just avoid the area if possible.
"You know every time we do a project there's improvement. And yeah there's some pain during that process, but in the long run, come on… We're getting a better road out of the deal,” said Hein.
Some drivers are frustrated, while others are trying to see the bright side.
"Just be patient. You get caught up in some traffic, maybe it's because God is just keeping you from getting in an accident somewhere else. That's the way I look at it,” said Steve Lacy, a Wichita resident and frequent driver.
