'We're all in': WSU breaks ground on $13.8 million Student-Athlete Success CenterPosted: Updated:
Wichita State had a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday for a Student-Athlete Success Center.
The $13.8 million building will be just south of Charles Koch Arena and will be a 36,000-square-foot facility. Construction begins this month and it should be done by July 2020.
"This facilities arms race that is, universities and college athletics. We're all in. If we're ever not all in, we need to get out," said Wichita State athletics director Darron Boatright. "We're committed to this long term. We're committed to this university, and this community and bringing high quality entertainment and keeping it here as we have over the years. "
Every athletic team at Wichita State currently shares the same academic center and one weight room. As you can imagine that can cause problems for student athletes, but this new building will change that.
According to WSU, the Student-Athlete Success Center will include a 2,500-square-foot study hall, tutoring rooms and a larger computer center. The WSU track and cross country teams will also get their own new space in the building.
The project will also renovate administrative offices inside Charles Koch Arena, which will create more space for the men's basketball, women's basketball and volleyball teams.
