WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Wichita police say a 36-year-old woman who was found in the middle of the road early Saturday morning was likely hit by a vehicle.

Officer responded at around 1:15 a.m. to an assist EMS call at Harry and Martinson, which is five blocks west of Seneca. They arrived to find the woman in the road suffering from severe injuries, Officer Paul Cruz said.

The woman was taken to a local hospital where she is improving but remains in critical condition. Her name was not released.

"The preliminary investigation shows that a passerby discovered the female in the road while traveling west on Harry," Officer Cruz said. "It is likely that the female was struck by a vehicle."

A witness reported seeing a blue Dodge Charger leaving the scene, but Cruz said it's unknown if that vehicle was involved.
