Free vegetable plants for Wichita community

The Sedgwick County Extension Center says all plants that were part of the promotion have been given away.

Hundreds of vegetable plants are being given away in Wichita.

The Sedgwick County Zoo donated the plants to be given away at the Sedgwick County Extension Center located at 21st and Ridge

"If you get a little extra with a free one, that's always a bonus," says gardener, Karla Jahn.

"They had quite a few plants donated to them, and they wanted to make sure they didn't go to waste," says Matthew McKernan, a Horticulture Agent at the Sedgwick County Extension Center.

Susie Courter and her husband, Charlie, are dedicated home gardeners.

"I got some tomato plants, different varieties. Some eggplants, different varieties...Three fourths of our backyard is garden," says Susie Courter.

The Courters and other gardeners in Kansas put a lot of money toward plants every year, so they're grateful for the few extra.

"This is just gonna be an extra harvest for the family," says Courter.

"It's amazing how much you can spend on plants and not even know it," says another gardener.

Plants are still being given away at the Sedgwick County Extension Education Center while supplies last.
