WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

A Wichita man has pleaded guilty to robbing three local businesses last fall.

U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said 38-year-old Willie Smith pleaded guilty Monday one count of aggravated robbery. He admitted the following:

  • Smith robbed the Express Mart convenience store at 565 S. Market in Wichita on Oct. 14. He showed the clerk what appeared to be a revolver.
  • He robbed Peter's Liquor store at 332 W. Harry on Oct. 15. A clerk said the robber pulled out what appeared to be a revolver.
  • He robbed a Quick Trip store at 1532 S. Seneca on Oct. 16. A clerk said the robber displayed what appeared to be a revolver and demanded money.

Smith was arrested following a three-hour standoff in the 800 block of South Topeka.

Investigators later searched his apartment and found a black BB gun they believe Smith used in the three robberies.

Sentencing is scheduled for August 26. He faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Kansas Department of Corrections show Smith has prior convictions of theft, robbery, flee and elude, and aggravated escape from custody. He was released from prison on October 8 -- days before the robberies -- after serving time for a parole violation.
