WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

A woman who was the subject of an infamous Wichita crime case has died.   Ruth Finley died last week in Wichita at the age of 89.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Finley told police she was being harassed, kidnapped and even stabbed by an unknown attacker who became known as "The Poet"

Following several years of investigation,  Finley admitted to police she made up the story and even stabbed herself, causing serious injuries.  Police didn't seek criminal charges because they believed Finley was mentally ill.

A psychologist working with police said "The Poet" was the result of an attack Ruth Finley suffered as a teenager.
