SMITHVILLE, Mo. (KAKE) -

Family and friends gathered Thursday night for a birthday celebration, but the little birthday girl wasn't there.

Macklyn Lucas would have turned 6 years old. She died last June near the Kansas City suburb of Smithville, Missouri. The girl's mother, Samantha Jones, admitted she'd been drinking when her van went off the road and crashed into a utility pole.

Macklyn died three days later.

WDAF reports dozens of people were at the girl's birthday celebration at a local park. Jones was at the party, but she didn’t speak with the Kansas City Fox station on camera since she’s awaiting her sentence. She pleaded guilty to felony DWI.

“We love Macklin, celebrated a lot of birthdays with her, and we miss her and want her family to know that we remember and care," Kimberlea Dupuis said. "It's tough."

“They know they can’t see and touch her, but they still talk to her and they still sing to her at school," said Sara Carrell, who taught Macklyn pre-K.. "Grace is, this is it. Everybody is coming together and loving, supportive.”
