Police and child welfare officials are investigating the death of a 2-year-old boy at a south Wichita motel last week.

Officers responded at around 9:45 a.m. Friday, May 31, to assist EMS on a report of a child not breathing at the Sunset Motel at 2328 South Broadway. Officer Charley Davidson said the boy, Zayden Jaynesahkluah, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said at the scene that the boy's death was medical, but they're waiting on toxicology results to confirm how he died.

"We don't know if it was medical or not," Davidson said.

The Department for Children and Families confirms it is investigating Zayden's death.

"The agency was prohibited from commenting on the case until Thursday when it became public knowledge, which triggered a provision in K.S.A 38-2212 that allows the agency to confirm its involvement," DCF said in a statement.

A family member told KAKE News that they have reached out to DCF before. Mike Deines with the agency would not confirm whether the child welfare officials have previously been involved with the boy.

Officer Davidson said police have had contact with the family before but did not offer any specifics.

"We’re not going into detail on whose fault, what happened etc but what we are going to do is come together for the families who are now in pain, hearts full of sorrow, eyes full of tears and minds full of memories!" a GoFundMe page says.
