Floodwaters recede around river in downtown Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Hours after the City of Wichita tweeted the Keeper of the Plains would light up as normal, the fire pots were still dark at dusk Wednesday night.

Even thought the Keeper wasn’t lit up as normal, there were other signs in the area that the flood waters were receding. Sidewalks that had been under water for days, even weeks, were back above water… in some cases, barely.

“It was up over the sidewalks alongside the river,” said Mike Snider, who was walking along the river. “Kind of interrupted some of the things they had planned for the river festival.”

After the water receded, plenty of debris and mud could be seen along the sidewalk. The city’s parks department has already been working to start cleaning up the area and a majority of the trails were passable already.
