HUTCHINSON, Kan. (KAKE) -

More than 30 inmates at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility helped fill thousands of sandbags to assist with flood preventions.

The inmates as well as staff assisted city and county officials by filling 6,000 sandbags on Thursday. Facility spokesperson Jordan Bell said the 31 South Unit inmates volunteered for the project after eight to 10 hours during the day.

"Let's make sure we do all we can to help our community," HCF Warden Dan Schnurr said when addressing inmates and staff.
