Support from community pours in for beloved local musician

Community members and businesses in Wichita are showing support for local musician Jenny Wood who was critically hurt in a crash on May 5th.

Police say two people speeding down the road in a stolen car rammed into the car the Wood's were in. The crash killed Wood's 70-year-old mother, Marie Wood, and her 12-year-old niece, Rosemary Wood.

On Sunday, Mort's Cigar and Martini Bar donated every penny made to the family.

Mort's Owner Emma Russell has known Wood for longer than a decade. Wood played live music at Mort's for several years.

"Jenny is just one of those bright lights that have just shined through the community for a very long time." said Russell, "She's got a long road for recovery. We want her to get back to being the Jenny that we all know."

Many of her friends and fans attended Sunday. Wood's close friend Elysia Rizo said Wood is a friend to everyone she meets.  "She just has such a big heart and a touching soul with the community," said Rizo, "She just cares so much for others that it comes through."

While Wood still has a long road to recovery, she is making steps each day.

"She's remembering things, she's speaking, she's playing guitar, telling jokes, she's telling jokes," said Rizo, "It's really a miracle, and the support of community means so much to us."

Wood remains in the hospital in serious condition.

Mort's Cigar and Martini Bar will donate 100% of proceeds Sunday from 12 p.m. - 11 p.m.

Sunflower Sessions Riverside Park will be held Sunday from 4 p.m. -7 p.m.
