OTTAWA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Authorities say a 47-year-old man was killed when his pickup truck crashed into a semi that jackknifed after hitting a deer in eastern Kansas.

The accident happened just after 5:30 a.m. Tuesday about seven miles east of Ottawa on K-68. The Kansas Highway Patrol says a deer ran out in front of a westbound semi, which locked up its brakes and jackknifed, becoming wedged on a bridge between guard rails. That's when a Ford pickup crashed into the rear of the semi's trailer.

The driver of the pickup, John Yaple of Harrisonville, Missouri, died at the scene. The 30-year-old semi driver was hospitalized for treatment of possible injuries.
