Council votes against cell tower in North Riverside

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

The Wichita City Council voted against a new cell phone tower in North Riverside.

The plan was to install an 80-foot wireless cell phone tower for T-Mobile at the northwest corner of 18th Street and Woodland. The property is zoned Limited Commercial.

Community activists have been fighting against this tower in the predominantly residential area.

They said this serves as an example that neighborhood activism works.

"Definitely was a group effort. Definitely had neighborhood support from all the neighborhoods affected. It's great that it's precedent that there is protection needed for the first tier neighborhoods particularly, that are more historic and really have less voice," said Claire Willenberg, neighborhood activist.

Council members James Clendenin and Bryan Frye were in favor of the development.

The developer is waiting to hear from T-Mobile regarding the next steps.
