MARSHALL, Texas (KAKE) -

Two Kansas college athletes were killed in a traffic accident as they were returning to their home state of Louisiana.

The crash happened at around 6 p.m. Wednesday near Marshall, Texas, which is just west of the Louisiana state line. Emergency crews responded to a crash involving a car and semi on Highway 59, according to The Marshall News Messenger.

The two men in the car, Jacobi Scott and Shelvin Keller, were killed. The two were football players at Southwestern College in Winfield and were apparently on their way home following the end of the school year.

Keller's last tweet at 5:51 p.m. said, "Be home in a few."

Southwestern College President Brad Andrews said Keller was a first-year running back and Scott transferred last fall. He was quarterback. They were described by their peers as "two of the nicest guys on campus."

Louisiana's Walker High School athletic director Steve Johnson described Scott as a “a dynamic young man” and “a great student, quiet and respectful."

Keller's high school coach shared emotional posts on Twitter.

Authorities have not said who was driving the car.
