WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Authorities have arrested a 34-year-old man accused of driving under the influence with two young children in his car when he crashed after a pursuit in north Wichita.

The crash happened just before 5 p.m. Wednesday in the 2100 block of North Madison, near 21st and Grove. The Kansas Highway Patrol says Markston Adkins was being pursued for traffic violations, but the trooper discontinued the chase due to speed and traffic.

Adkins allegedly continued heading north on Madison at a high rate of speed. His Pontiac Grand Prix then went over a curb and crashed into a parked vehicle. His car came to rest in the Plaza North Senior Residences parking lot.

The patrol says a 3-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl were in the car and complained of pain after the crash. The crash log doesn't state whether they were hospitalized.

Adkins was treated at Wesley Medical Center and then booked into jail Wednesday night for DUI, reckless driving, flee and elude, aggravated child endangerment, no child safety restraint system, distribute marijuana between 25 and 450 grams, and other traffic charges.

Additional information was not released.
