WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

A local business paid a premium for aluminum cans to celebrate Earth Day.

Wichita Iron and Metal paid $0.50 per pound of aluminum cans, up five cents from the usual price.

"We want to promote Earth Day and we want to promote the recycling," said Bonnie Hartstein, president of Wichita Iron and Metal.

For every 10 pounds collected, Hartstein said they will donate a tree to the Arbor Day Foundation.

"This gives us the opportunity to donate trees to replant forests and that helps everyone," said Hartstein.

In total, 9,000 pounds were collected today. That is an increase from last year when they collected 6,500 pounds.

They will host another similar promotion on America Recycles Day, which will be held on November 15th.
