Shockers fall to Houston in game 1 of series
WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Houston Cougars handed the Wichita State baseball team a 13-5 loss in the opening game of a three-game American Athletic Conference series Friday night, April 12, at Eck Stadium, Home of Tyler Field.
Wichita State (18-16, 3-4 American) and Houston (19-15, 4-6 American) are scheduled to play game two of the series at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13.
The Shockers were led at the plate by freshman outfielder Jack Sigrist, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs after entering the game in the sixth inning, while Jordan Boyer also had a pair of RBIs while going 1-for-3 at the plate. Garrett Kocis and Brady Slavens each tallied a pair of hits, respectively.
Junior right-hander Preston Snavely (3-3) suffered his third loss on the mound this season after allowing seven earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks in 4 1/3 innings.
The Cougars were led at the plate by first baseman Joe Davis, who went 3-of-4 with five RBIs, hitting two home runs to bring his home run total to 16 on the season. Rey Fuentes III and Jared Triolo each had an RBI, as they both picked up two hits apiece in the winning effort, while Brad Burckel and Kyle Lovelace both hit RBI triples in the game.
Junior left-hander Lael Lockhart Jr. (3-4) picked up the win on the mound after allowing zero earned runs on five hits with a career-high nine strikeouts and one walk in six innings of work.
