Wins for Kansas: Junior League of Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

April is Child Abuse Awareness Month. And this week women around Wichita will want to ask you about their fashion, because their handbag carries a message they'd like to share.

That purse is a trash bag. While it'll be a choice for Geneva Benton to carry it around, for some kids it isn't.

"Kids that are in foster care or in abuse situations, they sometimes only get a few minutes of time in which to gather the things that they are going to take with them that are their possessions and they're usually handed a trash bag to put it in," said Benton who is with the Junior League of Wichita.

The Junior League's trash bag handbag campaign is designed to make to do a double take and ask why.

"It's really about initiating a response from the public," Benton said. "For someone to come up and say, 'Why in the world are you carrying around this blue bag with all of your possessions in it?'"

The Junior League is raising money to help buy duffel bags for the kids so trash bags don't have to be in the picture.

To help them with their mission, KAKE-TV and our partners DeVaughn James Injury Lawyers honored them as this week's Wins for Kansas.
