WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Wichita police say they have arrested a 16-year-old East High School student who allegedly stole a gun from her home and took it on the bus to school.

Officers were called just before 7 a.m. Wednesday to the report of a parent concerned about a firearm missing from her home. Officer Charley Davidson said the 38-year-old mother believed her daughter was in possession of the gun on the bus.

A USD 259 spokesperson says the district was also notified that a student could have a weapon on an East bus on its way to school.

Police located the girl on the bus at Maple and Glenn streets. Davidson said she had the loaded handgun in her backpack.

The teen was taken into custody without incident and booked into juvenile detention for theft and criminal possession of a firearm by a juvenile.

Police and USD 259 say there were no threats made to any students, no disruptions to any school and no one was injured.

Additional details about the incident were not provided.
