COOLIDGE, N.M. (KAKE) -

Authorities in New Mexico confirm a couple from the Wichita area died in a motorcycle crash earlier this week.

The accident happened at around 7 p.m. local time Sunday on Interstate 40 near Coolidge. The McKinley County Sheriff's Office reports the motorcycle was exiting the interstate, hit a patch of gravel and struck a sign. David and Renita Brainard died at the scene.

"My heart is broken," the couple's son, Sean Brainard, said. "My dad was a warrior, and he died a warrior, trying to protect my mom."

Sean said his father was a 24-year veteran of the Air Force. His mother was an accountant who loved horses and woodworking.

"I love them, and I've missed them since the last time I saw them. I miss them even more today."

Sean is one of four siblings. The couple also leaves behind seven grandchildren.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the family with expenses. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on March 19 at Pleasantview Baptist Church in Derby.

Coolidge is approximately 100 miles west of Albuquerque.
