2nd man-made 'Snow Day' canceled due to equipment failure

There’s no snow in the forecast today for Wichita – even the fake flakes.

The City of Wichita announced that it had to cancel snow day events because of a mechanical failure. Three pumps had blown, which limited Wichita Snow Bros ability for crafting the perfect snow day. The company was able to make some snow at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, but it isn’t enough to sled on.

“Snow Day 2 is cancelled at this time due to some major equipment malfunctions and not enough snow,” Wichita Snow Bros wrote on Facebook. “We will do this event in the future and do it right for you.”

The city said it wants to make the best sledding experience possible and plans to reschedule this event.

Annette Lawless contributed to this report.

One by one, kids eagerly climbed up a snow covered hill in Riverside and then flew back down on sleds. The city is calling for a second snow day, and it started with "Snow Glow" Friday night.

Parents, grandparents and kids came out in the dozens. This is the second time Snow Bros and Wichita have teamed up to create the perfect sledding destination.

"There's nothing to do here in Wichita, and you know what, the Parks and Recreation Department, we're changing that," says Troy Hoytman, Director of Parks and Recreation.

Food trucks, music, fire pits and best of all: an unlimited amount of trips down the big hill.

"Very fast, very icy and very bumpy," says Nick Brown, a sledder.

Without much snow this year, most kids haven't been sledding in a long time, making "Snow Glow" that much more exciting.

"I haven't gone sledding since like I was a little girl. It's so much fun to go down the sled and experience all this fun stuff I had as a kid," says Jasmyn Brown.

City leaders hope to add more fun events in the future. If you missed "Snow Glow," you can come out to another snow day Saturday, February 9th at 9 a.m. The event is free, just bundle up and bring your sled.
