Former Wichita State players to return for summer tournamentPosted: Updated:
Joe Ragland, Malcolm Armstead, Cleanthony Early, Shaq Morris, Tekele Cotton and Garret Stutz. Those are the former Wichita State men's basketball players who have committed so far to play for the AfterShocks in a winner-take-all tournament this summer.
The Aftershocks will play in Koch Arena July 25-28 for regional games in the tournament. The schedule has not been set yet as to who they will play, but there will be eight teams in each region. Winners of their respective regions will go to Chicago, Illinois to compete for the championship and $2 million grand prize.
Some former players, including Frankamp who was recently with the Wichita State University basketball team, but it also traces back to 2006 with J.T. Durley. Former players like Karon Bradley, John Robert Simon and Zach Bush will coach the team. Simon said they have been looking forward to being in this tournament for a long time.
"We watch this tournament, we see like, man why doesn't Wichita State have a team representing in it?" said Simon. "And to finally get it kind of together and assembled, it's been really exciting."
Other teams that have played in the tournament's past are Boeheim's Army from Syracuse and The Scarlet and Gray from Ohio State. Aftershocks General Manager Tien Huynh said he looks forward to trying to win a championship against teams like this, but their goals go beyond that.
"The record for TBT attendance for one game, I believe is like 3,200 or 3,400," said Huynh. "And so, for us, our goal obviously is to to exceed, not only to beat, but exceed that record."
