Local reaction to President's speech

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

President Trump’s first oval office address got the attention of many Americans, including political scientists. One of which admits, the speech took him by surprise.

“In terms of the fundamentals of the argument, it didn’t change,” said Dr. Russell Arben Fox, Political Science Professor at Friends University. He told KAKE News he was surprised the president’s speech focused on details so quickly, citing earlier rallies where he would often drive to the emotion of the matter earlier in the address.

“I expected the entire thing to be nothing but stories of MS13 gangs rampaging across our cities,” he said. “I thought that’ what he was going to do the entire time because that seemed to be his only real option.

President Trump did mention the killing of a California Police Officer, and the suspect identified as an illegal immigrant by local law enforcement.

Local representatives started to weigh in late Tuesday.

Representative Ron Estes tweeted “the President clearly laid out for the American people why we need to address the crisis on our southern border.”

Representative Roger Marshall also tweeted, “the border is a national security and humanitarian crisis.”
