One person hurt in house fire in west Wichita

Medics took one person to the Via Christi burn unit with critical injuries after a house fire Sunday morning.

The Wichita Fire Department responded to a fire in the 100 block of S. Edwards just before noon. Firefighters say the fire was contained to the kitchen with minimal damage. The fire caused about $10,000 in damage to the house, another $2,000 to personal belongings.

Firefighters say the victim's injuries are from smoke inhalation.

"The main thing is, on something like this, if you do have a fire in your house, the best thing you can do is get out of the house," said Lt. Troy Thissen, Wichita Fire Department.  "From what I'm gathering, so far, he was making attempts to get personal items out of the house.  And that can cause injuries as a result of the smoke inhalation."

Investigators are still looking for the cause of the fire.
