Wichita police say one person suffered injuries in a shooting that stemmed from a fight between three homeless people.

Officers were called just after 9 a.m. Tuesday to the report of a shooting at I-135 and South Hydraulic, near Chapin Park. Officer Charley Davidson said the 36-year-old victim had a single gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The victim was rushed to an area hospital where he was listed in stable condition Tuesday afternoon.

Officer Davidson said the victim and a woman were staying in a wooded area when a third homeless person, who was armed with a shotgun, approached them.

"A disturbance ensued between the individuals and one shot was fired by the suspect, striking our victim."

The victim and woman headed toward Hydraulic while the suspect retreated in the wooded area.

Police later found and arrested the suspect, identified as Richard Fagan. He was booked for attempted first-degree murder, failure to comply and criminal possession of a firearm.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office and Kansas Highway Patrol assisted Wichita police.

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Fagan has prior convictions of aggravated sexual battery, aggravated burglary, DUI (4th or subsequent conviction), and conspiracy to commit robbery. He served stints in prison from 1988 through 2015.
