WICHITA, Kan. (WBJ) -

Wichita State University President John Bardo has been hospitalized, according to a school spokesman.

Joe Kleinsasser confirmed to the WBJ in an email Tuesday morning that Bardo, the school's president since 2012, had been hospitalized due to a flare-up of a chronic lung condition.

Kleinsasser added that Bardo, as of Tuesday morning, is "continuing to work with members of the executive team on university issues" during the hospitalization.

Bardo, 70, has been dealing with a number of health issues in recent months, including the fracturing of three vertebrae, according to WSU's student newspaper.

Check back later to the WBJ site as more information becomes available on this developing story.

Bardo released the following statement:

I am in the hospital being treated for a flare-up of a chronic lung condition. My doctors tell me that I can expect several weeks of convalescence, meaning I won't be with you for the final few weeks of the semester, or for graduation.

I'm in good spirits and continuing to work with members of the Executive Team on university issues. I'm looking forward to being back on campus and seeing you in the new year.
