MULLINVILLE, Kan. (KAKE) -

State troopers say a 71-year-old man died after a vehicle hit him on a highway in southwest Kansas.

The accident happened just after 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the junction of Highways 54 and 400 in Kiowa County. It was the second accident at that location due to slick conditions.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says Larry Embers of McPherson had gotten out of his car to check the damage from the first accident. He was walking around the vehicle to get back in when state troopers say a Jeep Wrangler hit him.

The 39-year-old driver of the Jeep proceeded to the closest town to report the incident.

Emergency responders rushed Embers to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
