Remembering firefighters lost in Yingling fire 50 years ago

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Wednesday marked fifty years since a devastating fire in Downtown Wichita that killed four firefighters.

Chief Tom McGaughey, Chief Inspector Merle Wells, Dale Mishler and Jimmy Austin were killed while they tried to fight the fire.

Part of the building collapsed during the fire.

Two years ago, a memorial plaque was installed and dedicated in the area where the dealership once stood on Topeka in Wichita.
