Wichita man gets life in prison for raping, trying to kill 7-year-old girl
A 24-year-old Wichita man has been sentenced to life in prison for the rape and attempted murder of a girl when she was just 7 years old.
After Sedgwick County District Judge Joe Kisner on Tuesday sentenced Corbin Breitenbach to life without the possibility of parole, the defendant shook his head and said he will appeal.
Prosecutors alleged that in June of 2017, he broke into a west Wichita apartment, choked the girl until she was unconscious, then took her to the balcony and raped her.
The now-9-year-old girl recorded a video of her reading how the rape has affected her. It was played during Breitenbach's sentencing hearing. She said she doesn't remember much of that night because of her injuries. But she said that Jesus and his angels came to her and told her to wake up -- that it wasn't time for her to die.
Breitenbach watched and heard several other statements. He didn't show any visible emotion.
In September, it took jurors about an hours to find Breitenbach guilty of attempted capital murder, rape, aggravated criminal sodomy and aggravated burglary. He acted as his own attorney.
The girl was one of the first witnesses called in Breitenbach's trial. She recalled spending the night at a family friend's apartment. The friend woke up to the sound of the girl crying and saw her naked in a bedroom. The girl spent several days in the hospital.
Breitenbach was already registered as a sex offender and served time in prison for choking and raping a 22-year-old woman in 2012. He was released on parole six weeks before attacking the girl.
Breitenbach asked for Tuesday's sentencing hearing be continued so that he could request a new trial. He said he's seeking child’s medical records to prove she doesn’t have an STD that he carries. Judge Kisner denied the continuance, saying there was no basis for a new trial.
