NASA 'Super Guppy' lands in Wichita for special pick-up

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

A rather peculiar-looking but special aircraft made another stop in Wichita.

The Aero Spacelines Super Guppy landed in Wichita on Wednesday to picking up some restored historic Apollo 11 mission-control consoles back to the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The consoles restored by the Kansas Cosmosphere's Spaceworks Division in Hutchinson and will be the centerpiece of an entire restoration of the mission operations control room. The Cosmosphere says they'll be finished in time for the 50th anniversary of the historic Moon landing, which was July 20, 1969.

The Super Guppy stopped in Wichita last year for fuel. At that time, it was carrying pieces of the Orion spacecraft, NASA's next capsule that will take astronauts to Mars.
