CANEY, Kan. (KAKE) -

Authorities say one person has died and three others were hurt in a crash involving five vehicles in southeast Kansas.

It happened just before 7:30 a.m. Friday on U.S. Route 166 near Caney. The Kansas Highway Patrol says a Ford pickup driven by a 17-year-old boy was heading west and veered into oncoming traffic, striking a Toyota Camry head-on.

An eastbound Chevy Malibu then hit the pickup, which was still in the roadway. A fourth vehicle tried to avoid the collision but also hit the pickup as well as a fifth vehicle that was stopped on the shoulder.

The driver of the Camry, 79-year-old Edgar Coots, of Caney, died at the scene. A 76-year-old passenger was taken to a local hospital, and the teen driving the truck was flown to a hospital in Tulsa.

The 81-year-old woman driving the Malibu was also hospitalized.

The other two drivers and three children in one of the vehicles were not hurt.
