Local radio personality's dog hailed a hero after finding neighbor in distress

Posted: Updated:

KFDI personality, Carol Hughes and her dog "Buddy" have been best buds for 13 years now. She always knew he was special but didn't expect what would happen on Tuesday evening.

“That night he decided that we’re gonna walk that way,” Hughes said.

Carol said her and Buddy usually go on about two walks a day and they were headed out on their evening walk when all of a sudden Buddy just stopped.

“I turned around and he’s looking at me and he’s looking that way like that and I said, “Really? You want to go that way?” Hughes said.

Hughes didn’t know it at the time but when Buddy chose to take a different route than usual, he was about to alert her to a neighbor who was in severe distress.

When the pair came around the corner, Hughes realized her former neighbor, a disabled man, had fallen in front of his home.

“You couldn’t really see him unless you were walking by. I don’t think if anybody was driving by, they ever would have seen him,” Hughes said.

Hughes called 9-1-1 and stayed with the man until help arrived.

After Hughes posted the incident to her Facebook page, Buddy became a town hero with over 1000 people liking his photo and giving him praise.

Whether a coincidence or Buddy knew, Hughes says she has no idea how long the man would have been stuck if it weren’t for Buddy.

“He’s a very sensitive dog. I just feel like he heard something and wanted to go see what it was,” Hughes said.

Hughes says her neighbor is doing better after the fall but his family is now looking into getting him a medical alert device.
