Man hurt in accidental shooting in south Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Wichita police say a man accidentally shot another person while playing with a 5-year-old boy and what they thought was a toy gun.

Officers responded at around 8:20 p.m. Monday to the report of a shooting in the 1400 block of East Pike, near Lincoln and Hydraulic. The homeowner told them she heard a gunshot and saw a 35-year-old man in the house with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officer Charley Davidson said the child was playing with toy guns in the house and a 24-year-old man began playing with the boy.

"At one point the male switched guns with the boy," Officer Davidson said. "The male thought the gun was a toy and it fired striking the male in the leg."

He said the man was holding the gun when it fired. Additional information was not provided.

Sunny, hot and turning a bit more humid today across KAKEland with highs climbing back into the 90s. The hot and moist air across KAKEland will provide fuel for some late day storms that could turn severe in North Central and South Central Kansas. Storms that develop late in the day Tuesday could produce large hail, high wind gusts and even a couple of tornadoes.
