Stray bullet from shootout injures woman in southeast WichitaPosted: Updated:
A shootout Monday night ended when a stray bullet hit a woman in her southeast Wichita home a block away.
The woman's husband, Tyrone Johnson, says he's lost a sense of security after learning his wife had been shot inside their house.
"Your heart starts beating fast and you don't know what condition they are until they tell you they're okay," Johnson said, adding that there are often children in their home and around Beech Elementary School across the street.
The bullet went through their window, through both of his wife's legs and into the wall.
"He did not care what he was shooting at or where he was shooting at," Johnson said. "So that lets me know that whoever done it really didn't care who he hit 'cause he could've hit anybody."
Officers were called at around 8:30 p.m. to the shooting on East Funston, near Harry and Webb Road. Investigators say a 24-year-old man was inside an apartment across the street, where they found multiple bullet holes both inside and outside. They say the man and others were shooting at each other when one of the bullets hit Johnson's wife.
"We're concerned at any type of shooting, any type of violent crime," Officer Charley Davidson said. "We continuously see a pattern of individuals with no conscience, no regard for others, resorting to gun violence."
While Johnson's wife recovers, he's hoping more people in the neighborhood will look out for one another.
He said, "i just want to thank my neighbors in my community for looking out, and we're going to continue looking out and make sure that we have a nice neighborhood."
No arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
