WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

A man accused of shooting his girlfriend in Wichita earlier this month has been arrested in New Mexico.

The Roosevelt County Detention Center in Portales confirmed that 28-year-old Eli Mendoza was booked late Tuesday night for a Kansas Department of Corrections fugitive warrant, concealing his identity and possession of marijuana. No bond has been set.

Wichita police say Mendoza shot his girlfriend near Broadway and Mt. Vernon on August 9. There was a disturbance while the two were driving and Mendoza pulled a handgun and shot the 34-year-old victim twice, according to Officer Charley Davidson.

The victim was hospitalized with injuries to her chest and elbow and has since been released.

Police say Mendoza fled in his girlfriend's SUV, which was later found abandoned in the 2200 block of South Market.

Mendoza has prior Kansas convictions of criminal threat, eluding law enforcement and DUI. He was last paroled in June.
