WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Wichita police are searching for the 28-year-old man accused of shooting his girlfriend Thursday afternoon.

Officers were called at around 3:30 p.m. to a shooting in the 100 block of West Mt. Vernon. The 34-year-old victim told arriving officers that her boyfriend, identified as Eli Mendoza, had shot her twice with a handgun.

The woman was hospitalized with injuries to her chest and elbow. She is expected to survive.

Officer Charley Davidson said there was a disturbance while the two were driving and Mendoza pulled a handgun and shot the victim twice.

Mendoza then fled in his girlfriend's SUV, which was later found abandoned in the 2200 block of South Market.

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Mendoza has prior convictions of criminal threat, eluding law enforcement and DUI. He was last paroled in June.

Mendoza is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
