Police standoff with armed suspect near North High ends

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Wichita police say a standoff near North High School with an armed man, has ended peacefully. 

It all started when the man barricaded himself in a home, after threatening a woman and her children.

Shortly before 5 p.m., SWAT was able to enter the home and took the man into custody. He has been taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

Officers were called just before 1 p.m. Thursday to the report of a disturbance with a weapon in the 400 block of West Avenue C, which is north of 13th and Waco. A SWAT team was called in to assist.

Officer Charley Davidson said the suspect was armed with a handgun and threatened to harm himself, a woman and her four children. Police were able to get the woman and children out safely.

Police believe the man is the woman's ex boyfriend.
