Arsonists setting fires in a Wichita neighborhood

Posted: Updated:

Tuesday morning alone, someone set five different fires in a neighborhood near 55th and South Broadway.

While most of the damage may be small, it's a big deal and threat to the people who are sleeping feet away from the fires.

Entire trash bins are melted to the ground and mailboxes are destroyed. But the worst damage of all is a BMW that someone set on fire.

"It's not funny. Fire is not funny," Shara McMahon said.

McMahon and her family were sleeping while their trash bin was burning at the edge of their driveway.

"At first we thought well, are we a target? Is somebody mad at our kids? Is somebody mad at us? Because you just never know," said McMahon.

At least one of the crimes was caught on camera.

In home surveillance video two people are caught seen lighting a mailbox on fire. The street was dark at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, but when the mailbox ignites so does a giant fire ball. The suspects are seen running away.

"It's concerning, you know. It could turn into, you know, just some kids playing around and catch a house on fire. Before you know it a whole house is on fire, and then people get injured or even killed," neighbor John Potter said.

Similar fires have been reported this week in other neighborhoods in south Wichita.

Wichita Police and fire investigators are looking into each case.
