GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KAKE) -

It's a girl! The Garden City zoo has welcomed a new giraffe. Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City announced the birth of it's newest member on Friday.

Lead keeper at the Zoo said she found Cleo in the early stage of delivery and at approximately 8 a.m. the calf was born.

This is the first calf for mom, Cleo and dad Juani. Animal care and veterinary stated they will check on the family tomorrow, after letting mom and baby bond.

"Mom and baby are doing just fine so far,' said General Curator Sarah Colman.

Zoo staff has been monitoring Cleo very closely since giving birth. Another keeper said that by 10 a.m. the calf was walking around and had nursed multiple times. Keepers will decide Saturday if mom and the calf will go outside or remain indoors. The father, Juani, will remain separated from the calf until the calf is steadier on her feet.
