Family member arrested in deadly shooting of Wichita man

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Wichita police have arrested have arrested a 27-year-old man accused of accidentally shooting and killing his cousin. 

Jail records show Martin David Ruiz Jr., was booked for one count of involuntary manslaughter in the death of 24-year-old Anthony Martinez. 

Officers were called at 12:30 a.m. Saturday to the report of a walk-in shooting victim at St. Joseph Hospital. Martinez told police he was at a home in the 2200 block of South Main when he was accidentally shot by his cousin. Family members had taken him to the hospital.

Martinez was then transported to St. Francis Hospital where he died at around 8:45 that morning. 

Lt. Todd Ojile said investigators learned Martinez, Ruiz and three or four others had been drinking beer and talking in the back yard of the home most of Friday evening. 

"Late in the evening, the 27-year-old male (Ruiz) will bring out a case or a bag that contained a couple of firearms," Lt. Ojile said. "This individual will remove the firearm from the bag and a very short time later the firearm will discharge, striking Mr. Martinez in the abdomen."

Ruiz was later located and arrested.

Wichita police say a man who walked into a local hospital with gunshot wounds dies.

Police say a 24-year-old male suffering from gunshot wounds to his arm and abdomen walked into Via Christi St. Joseph Hospital around 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

Officers say the shooting happened at a home in the 2200 block of S. Main. Investigators say the 27-year-old cousin of the victim was showing him a firearm when the gun went off. The victim later died in the hospital.

Officers do have a suspect in custody. The name of the victim hasn't been released.
