WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Georgia Tech's Joey Bart is the 2018 Johnny Bench Award winner, given each year from the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission to the top catcher in Division 1 baseball.

Bart was the No. 2 overall draft pick in this year's MLB Draft going to the San Francisco Giants.

As a junior he led the ACC in batting average and was the conference's player of the year. He hopes to follow in the footsteps of another Bench Award finalist and Giants legend Buster Posey.

"It's an honor to win this award to stand up there with those guys meant a lot to me and to be here in Wichita and to get all this going and having a great time," he said. "I'm starting my career now and it was nice to come out here and pause for a couple of days and take home this award but I've got to thank God and thank everyone for being there for me and thank my parents."

Eastern Kentukcy's Alex Holderbach and Marshall's Reynaldo Pastrana were the other two finalists.
