Man shot to death in Northeast Wichita

A 30-year-old man has died following a shooting in northeast Wichita.   

The shooting happened in a strip mall parking lot at 21st and Grove. Lafian Berryman was pronounced dead at a local hospital Tuesday night.  

Officers said they found Berryman in his vehicle with a bullet wound to the chest. Police said Berryman and a woman were sitting in a car, while the suspect and another woman sat in a truck. Investigators said Berryman and the suspect argued before the fatal shot was fired.

Investigators said the suspect left the scene for a short time. Police said the suspect called 911 and then returned to the scene and told officers he had been involved in the shooting.   

Jail records show Leon Dukes, 30 was booked for second-degree murder. 

Berryman's death was Wichta's 23rd homicide of 2018.

One person is in custody and another is in critical condition after a shooting in Northeast Wichita.

Investigators are still at the scene near 21st and Grove, trying to gather information in regards to a shooting that occurred Tuesday shortly after 7 p.m.

The shooting occurred in the K-Plaza strip mall parking lot.

Officers say they found a man in his thirties, inside of a vehicle, the man was critically shot.

The victim did not have any passengers inside his car.

There was also damage found to the surrounding vehicles and damage to to the strip mall.

Wichita police say they’re hoping to look at security footage in the area to help with the investigation.

Police say the suspect is in custody after turning himself into police.

“We did have several witnesses giving us descriptions and we were able to locate those witnesses. We also located a person of interest. At this time we have nobody outstanding" said Sgt. Michael O' Brien.

Police say the victim was taken to a local hospital where he is still in critical condition.
