Lamar Roth, Excel Industries Dir. of Human Resources, was a part of the project to put in the memorial. "It's one of those events that changes you forever," Roth said. "We hope that it's a place that people can remember because we don't want to forget the people who lost their lives and those who were injured. And what the event meant to the community."

At the center of the memorial is a seal designed by Lt. Bryan Hall with the Newton Police Department. The seal has three starts for those killed and 14 fires representing those injured during the shooting. In the middle of the stars and fires is a phoenix. The phoenix represents the community rising up from the tragedy.

While the tragedy still stings for those in Hesston this memorial was put in place to bring the community peace.
