OLPE, Kan. (KAKE) -

Authorities say 38 dogs were rescued from a Kansas home after one was found dead in a dumpster.

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office says someone reported finding the dead dog Thursday evening at 10 Center Street in Olpe. A second dog was alive but extremely sick.

The dog that was still alive was taken to Emporia Veterinary Hospital.

"During further investigation it was found that there were approximately 37 more dogs living in a home in the area," the sheriff's office said in a release. "The owner was contacted and requested assistance to rehome the dogs."

Unleashed Pet Rescue out of Mission, Kansas, was contacted to find homes for the dogs. The rescue assisted the sheriff's office and the owner of the dogs by taking the dogs to find new homes.

"The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Unleashed Pet Rescue with the Animal Justice League of America for all the assistance they provided to us."

The Emporia Gazette reports Danielle Reno, CEO of Unleashed Pet Rescue, said the dogs were generally in good condition but they will be in foster care for some time because many were not well socialized.

The investigation is ongoing.
