ATCHISON, Kan. (KAKE) -

Two people died and another was critically hurt when a car crashed head-on into a semi in northeast Kansas on Tuesday.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reports the car was heading north on Route 59 in Atchison County at around 5 p.m. when it crossed the center line and hit the southbound semi, which was pulling a cattle trailer.

The driver of the car, 55-year-old Elaine Drennon, and her passenger, 54-year-old Karen Keil, died at the scene. The patrol's online crash log says Keil was not wearing a seat belt. She was from Kansas City and Drennon was from Atchison.

The man driving the semi, 48-year-old William Wilson, of Annville, Kentucky, was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
