Air conditioner stolen from Wichita nonprofit that helps moms, babies

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

A Wichita nonprofit organization that helps economically challenged moms and children had one of its air conditioning units stolen.

Cristin Coats, operations manager for The Treehouse, said the unit must have been stolen over the weekend. They called a local heating and air company after repeatedly turning down the thermostat with no results.

Cooks Heating & Cooling went to check on the problem and discovered the unit was gone.

Coats said half the building -- located at 151 North Volutsia -- is affected. The organization was working on filing a police report and reporting the theft to insurance.

The Treehouse's website says it depends "on caring individuals to support us in many ways, especially financially. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit. We do not participate in United Way or receive financial support from government programs. We depend solely on financial gifts from caring individuals to keep our lights on."
